Mending Wall Day 2017 – April 15th

Mending Wall Day is an annual event started in 2015 by your friends at American Stonecraft. We named it in honor of Robert Frost’ poem “Mending Wall”. It is a half day of community service that aims to increase cultural awareness of stonewalls by inviting our neighbors to come together and tend to fieldstone walls in visible public settings. Our third annual Mending Wall Day will take place in Boston at Bussey Brook Meadow for the second year in a row. We will complete the wall along South Street that we began last year.

This is an opportunity to celebrate our rocky farmland, stonewalls, and community; all of which are defining characteristics of New England. Click here to see photos from Mending Wall Day 2016.

Mending Wall Day 2017

Saturday, April 15, 2017
9am – 12:30pm

We invite you to get out and enjoy fresh spring air and lend a hand to help clean up around the stonewall. All ages and ability levels are welcome. Participants must check-in and sign a waiver upon arrival. More ambitious attendees will also conduct light repairs to the wall itself, from which others will be trimming vines and brush, collecting litter, and re-stacking loose stones. At the closing of the day, we will conduct a raffled of a beautiful local New England fieldstone Food Slab.

Your participation in Mending Wall Day 2017 will get you entered into a raffle to win a gift from American Stonecraft!

LOCATION

Bussey Brook Meadow, Arnold Arboretum, Boston MA. Click here to see the meeting point on Google Maps.

GETTING THERE

By T: Forest Hills MBTA Station, Orange Line. When you leave the Forest Hills station, head south on Washington and you’ll quickly see the Washington Street Gate to Bussey Brook Meadow. Walk through the Meadow along Blackwell Path until you get to South Street. Cross South Street and you will arrive at our meeting point just inside the South Street Gate.

By Car: There is limited parking at the meeting point. If there is no parking space, park along Hyde Park Ave or Washington Street and enter Bussey Brook Meadow through the Washington Street Gate. Walk along the Blackwell Path until you get to South Street. Cross South Street and you will arrive at our meeting point just inside the South Street Gate. Please note: we do not recommend parking along South Street as there is very limited shoulder or pull off area for vehicles and we will be working on the wall next to the road. There may be additional parking at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Building, although we haven’t confirmed the weekend parking lot rules.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL MENDING WALL DAY

  • Long pants and closed-toe footwear required
  • Work gloves or gardening gloves and sunblock are highly recommended
  • Light snacks, coffee, and water will be available while supplies last
  • Poison ivy sap is present in vines around this location; Tecnu Soap is often effective against the sap if you are susceptible
